Ladder — the daily ordering game, board

ladder by biti by bit

    Five places, one order

Every day is five Australian places and one way of ordering them — north to south, west to east, or nearest to farthest from a capital.

    1. Move a place with the ▲ and ▼ buttons on its rung. Nothing is timed and nothing is final until you submit.
    2. Submit the order. You are told how many rungs are right, and those rungs lock; the ones that are wrong stay loose for the next try.
    3. Three tries. Then you see the real figures, in order, whether you got it or not.

You are never told which way a wrong rung is wrong — only that it is wrong. With five places that is enough to work with and not so much that the second try is a formality.

Distances are great-circle — as the crow flies, not as the Hume drives — measured from coordinates rounded to about a kilometre. No two rungs on any day are closer together than 60 km, so nothing here turns on that rounding.
